Social Service 2017

Now, who doesn't love animals?

Social service is definitely a hyped event among Interactors. It is one of the last annual Interact agendas where a location is selected, for us to do good deeds. This year, we went to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park on the 5th of August, 2017.

Most of us gathered at the school before heading off to the zoo by bus, and a handful opted for their own transport. For those following the bus, we had our simple breakfast on the way there. We reached the zoo after around an hour of bus ride. We were so pumped to start off our activities ahead, which none of us knew of yet. But we do know we’re gonna be seeing animals! After waiting for the zoo’s authorities, we were then separated into 3 groups, each group with a task of their own. One group was tasked to do some cleaning up, another was to stencil various animals’ footprints along the side of the paved trails and another to paint a mural.

My group, which was the one to do some cleaning up, was led to a few locations. We raked up dry leaves and made the surrounding looked more pleasant, as well lessening the workers’ tasks. Whilst cleaning, a Korean tourist even came up to us asking about the park’s operation hours. We excitedly greeted him "annyeonghaseyo" 😆

Meanwhile, the mural was drawn following a sketch prepared before the day. Mural was painted at the entrance of the spot used for animal show. As it wasn't a small space on the wall, the job wasn't able to be done completely on that day and had to be brought forward to the next day. Some of the group members went back to the zoo the following day and finished up the rest of it.

Now for the third group, the task to stencil animal footprints along the side of the paved trails in the park was an interesting and unique one. The intention behind painting those footprints was to serve as a simple indirect guide for kids, hoping they would not get lost in the zoo. What a brilliant idea! Let’s hope it fulfilled its purpose and there will be less kids crying for their parents, terrified.
This could even improve tourists' experiences in our wildlife park :)

After all the completed tasks, we had the opportunity to stroll around seeing some animals and watch an animal show. We were entertained by all the animals, and the show they and the zoo keepers put on. Brainy animals, they are. A friend of us, Jiliwina got to show her love for snakes as she volunteered herself during the snake part of the show. She was brave 👏👏 Eylia volunteered herself too for the parrot part of the show, where she had to switch the positions of the bowls, in attempt to confuse the parrot. But nah ah, we can't fool them 😉

Towards the end, we had our lunch in a sheltered place in the middle of the park. There, we presented our token of appreciation, which was money collected from all the students in our school, St. Francis Convent, to the zoo authorities. The fund collected is our little contribution towards the upkeep of a Sabah’s tourist attraction, Lok Kawi Wildlife Park.

We are immensely grateful towards Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, for granting us the opportunity to carry out our annual social service there, and giving us a chance to be a tad bit closer to wildlife. (well, despite the cage separating) Not forgetting the friendly people there too! Definitely a lesson learned from the good deeds done. Also, a special thanks to Mr. Sazliman, for joining us on this meaningful day and bringing along his wife and son. The more the merrier :)
